Grid Art

Grid Art (H: 10 in x W: 12 in)
My initial grid art idea was such a failure, I came up with this idea two days before it was due. I wanted to incorporate yarn somehow because the yarn was supposed to be used for my first idea which was yarn and nail art. When I began this project with the nails, I realized 900 is a lot to nail in and it was causing a disturbance to the dogs living in my apartment building. So, I had to omit that idea and come up with something else. I realized that I can use push pins and wrap the string around that instead.  Unfortunately, that did not work either. My last resort was to go with an abstract/ pixelated look. I was inspired by Dali's portrait of Abraham Lincoln, a photographer we viewed in class that photographed family members and used a needle and string to cover the faces of the individuals (could not seem to find his or her name again in my research), and another artist, Evelin Kasikov with her stitch art (I can't stitch so I decided to glue the yarn) The most difficulty I had for this project was the left side where the trees were. I was unsure of how to imitate the figure of leaves with yarn. The left side, to me personally, is the most successful. It is clear, yet still abstract. In conclusion, this project was very difficult. Especially because I worked with small pieces of the image. Each square has even smaller squares within in it, and I had to glue the yarn one by one. Work small is very complex.
